"We're the only country on earth stitched together by words and, most important, their dangerous progeny, ideas. And those ideas have had weight. They have had force, not just for us in our eternal dealings, but for the rest of the world." ~ Ken Burns

Day 8

" I asked Ring Lardner the other day how he writes his short stories, and he said he wrote a few widely separated words or phrases on a piece of paper and then went back and filled in the spaces." ~ Harold Ross

Prompts of the Day:

Fiddle with the temperature. Where your character is suddenly gets hot, or cold, to an extreme where something needs to be done about it.

or

Include the following line(s) [edit pronouns/tense/etc if necessary]:

"Never shall we die."

(from credit, "Credit")

Tip of the Day:

Know the difference between eustress, and distress. Eustress is a positive kind of stress that improves your mood and your productivity. Distress leads to anxiety, and potentially illness.

If the extreme goal of 50k/30 days causes you eustress, that's great. However, if it starts to freak you out and make you miserable, back off a bit.

Also remember, both types of stress- good and bad- put strain on the body. Even if you are determined to make that 50k, make sure you still make time to relax occasionally and let your body rest, or else you're likely to wake up December 1 with the flu.

Re: Blog comment... In response to a question yesterday about the desktop edition of WoD and whether it's any different - The desktop version has more options, including a sliding scale for grace period, the ability to disable or enable "always in front" "fullscreen" "disable save til goals met" and "disable backspace." You can also change colors and font, and write in any time goal you want. Oh, and you have options for your feedback sound, including but not limited to "evil violins," "alarm clock from hell," and "babies crying."

The desktop version also has a "stats" tab that tracks average WPM and similar stuff, and an option to connect to a friend to word-war (I haven't tried that feature yet; it says it's "still in Beta so no guarantees" and I haven't had any friends mention they have the desktop edition).

  1. Well the desktop version just sounds snazzy. I might be up for buying it, depending of course on how I fair with the online version first. Have to try it out first and see if it works with me.

  2. I find the temperature prompt amusing, considering I just looked outside and O.O. There's snow on the ground. :)
