"We're the only country on earth stitched together by words and, most important, their dangerous progeny, ideas. And those ideas have had weight. They have had force, not just for us in our eternal dealings, but for the rest of the world." ~ Ken Burns

Day 7

"Cradle for a cat, Wolfe looks back,
How many angels can you fit upon a match?
I want to know why Hemmingway cracked,
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction"

– Lyrics from, "Stranger Than Fiction," Bad Religion

Prompts of the Day:

Go out somewhere with lots of busy people around- a subway or train stop, a Dunkin' Donuts at rush hour, the mall, etc. Get out of the way, and then look busy while you listen. Write down some of the fragments of conversation you hear, and use that as today's prompt.

or

Include the following line (change the endearment if you absolutely must):

"Oh, no, my turtle-dove..."

Tip of the Day:

Plan ahead! Or not... Mostly, I wanted to say sorry to the down-time, for those of you who checked the blog between midnight and seven AM EST. I only have a week's worth of blogs written so far. I expected to have more time to get the next week's prepared yesterday. I'll get them up today.

The real tip is kind of like "plan ahead," but isn't that exactly. Look at the time you're spending on NaNo. Do you work best when you have large blocks of time, or under a deadline? Can you do 800 words in an hour when you only have an hour, but only 1000 in two hours, and 1100 in three hours? Have you tried tools like Write or Die by Dr Wicked?

Yes, this is a plug for WoD. I use it all the time, all year long, and it's great because I am a serial procrastinator. I've paid the $10 for the desktop edition-- twice, actually. I had to replace a faulty hard drive, but WoD was the first thing I put back on.

If you can't afford it or just don't want to buy it, WoD has a free online version.

  1. Is there any difference between the online and desktop versions of WoD?

How does it differ from word or any other program?
